ATILLIO PAGLI

One of the most prestigious consulting oenologists in the world, Attilio works all over Italy, as well as in South America, and is featured in Decanter Magazine’s list of the world’s top wine makers – as judged by their peers.

As charming as an individual as the wines he creates, Atillio has a refreshing view of his work and a clear and consistent philosophy that has steered him towards creating some of the world’s famous 100 point wines.

“I’m not a celebrity, I’m just someone who works in agriculture like everyone else; but I’ve had the good fortune to have the eyes, nostrils and palate that can recognize a great wine.

The most important thing is the vineyard: that is what provides vision and continuity. And that is why understanding and respecting the terroir is the most crucial attribute for anyone who wants to do this job. Wine must be a testimonial for its origins and its links with its terroir, which is the sum of the climate, the soil, the people and the culture of a given area.

Grapes have unique personalities and each one has to be interpreted in a different way. My task is to ruin as little as possible of the raw materials that nature gives me, putting into the bottle as high a proportion as possible of the fruit’s potential.

Paying attention to detail is just as fundamental, because in every year it is the tiny things that make the difference between a good wine and a great one.”

ALEX BURGE

Alex Burge is Managing Director of Tenuta Cappellina and the man with the vision to convert Tenuta Cappellina into a sustainable, organic and award winning winery. Alex has the distinction of being bilingual, with perfect Italian and English, which comes as no surprise when you discover he is a product of English and Dutch parents who brought him up in Sicily, before returning to the UK to gain a degree at Cambridge.

His career then took him to Bordeaux where he worked in the wine industry for a number of years as a Negociant, working with many of the top wine brands, before returning to his native Italy to run the sales and marketing departments in a number of well known wineries.

Such a passion for wine eventually leads you to wanting to feel the grapes between your fingers, and the opportunity to head up a new project was too irresistible for Alex who over the past decade has devoted his life to the development of Tenuta Cappellina and its wines.
